Canolfan Y Fron

With a combination of National Lottery and Welsh Government grant funding, this former primary school in the village of Y Fron, has been transformed into a vibrant new community centre, with cafe and community shop, changing rooms and an 16-bed bunkhouse.

The challenge for Dobson:Owen and the client was to remodel and extend this redundant Victorian school building into a modern multi-use community facility, working with a modest budget and tight programme. As part of the transformation into a more attractive, unified and energy efficient building, the envelope was wrapped in insulated render, new windows and was completely re-roofed. It is now powered entirely by renewable energy from air-source heat pumps, alongside an 8kW solar array.
